Easy No-Sew Napkin Pillows

The following post contains affiliate links. Read my full disclosure here.

I made some of the cutest pillows out of cloth napkins to go with my new sofa. I searched and searched to find pillows that I wanted. They were all so pricey! One day I was in Target and came across some cloth napkins on clearance for $6. They were the perfect size to make 20″ by 20″ pillow covers for my inserts. I figured I could make two pillows out of the $6 package and had nothing to lose.

I had seen my friends Laura and Rachel do this and knew it was worth a try. The napkins came in a pack of four. This meant I could have two pillows with a back and front out of one package. To get started you will need:

Scissors

Cloth Napkins

Pillow Inserts

Clothes Pins

Liquid Stich

Tassel (optional)

First Iron out all the cloth napkins and get them nice and straight. After they are ironed pair out two napkins (a back and front). Take the liquid stitch and put a small line around all the outer edge except one side. That one side will be the opening you put the insert into later. Use clothespins to secure the liquid stitch between the back and front napkin and let it dry overnight.

Come back the next morning and remove all the clothespins to see your pillow cover almost finished. Take the pillow insert and put it into the one side you did not glue. Get it all situated and fluffed with the corners fitted. Apply the liquid stitch along the open end using clothespins to close and secure as you go. This side will be harder because of the insert bulging. Doing small sections at a time clipping the clothespins to secure as you go will work best. Let it dry overnight. Remove the clothespins the next day and enjoy! If you want to add a tassel to one or more corners, add that in when you are applying the glue at each corner. Secure with a clothespin until dry.

Yes, your insert will be glued into the pillow. However, It won’t be hard to get it out by ripping the seem or using scissors if needed. At $3 a pillow, I don’t mind messing up the pillow when I want to change covers and get my insert out. Or you can use inexpensive inserts to permanently have this as a pillow.

A super nice pillow for a fraction of the cost of the ones I was seeing in stores. No sewing machine needed. The fabric glue is permanent and dries clear. Go find some cloth napkins and make your own one of a kind pillow.

Simple Caprese Salad Recipe

The following post contains affiliate links. Read my full disclosure here.

I am on a caprese salad kick lately. I just love how fresh and easy it is to make. There are so many variations of this recipe. You can really get as creative as you want. Whatever flavor and toppings you like can turn this into a custom favorite.

Tomatoes are so good during the summer. Especially if you have a garden or grow your own. I have a black thumb but I love when my neighbors and friends share their fresh tomatoes. This salad pairs perfectly with any dinner (summer or not).

The two secret ingredients that I have found to make this salad the easiest are pictured below. They really make this salad look like a gourmet masterpiece with minimal effort. Definitely my kind of cooking. The balsamic glaze is a perfect balance of savory and sweet. The easy to use squeeze bottle allows the drizzle to come out just right. Let’s be honest, chopping fresh basil is the worst. At least for me. Those leaves never cooperate and then I have big chunks and small bits. My hands smell like basil for the rest of the day. Not anymore. This Gourmet Garden lightly dried fresh basil is amazing. It stays fresh up to four weeks after you open the package. It is all finely chopped and ready to sprinkle over your salad.

This is my go-to salad recipe lately and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I added chopped macadamia nuts in the salad below. I love the added crunch and flavor it brings. However, pine nuts and other nuts would also be so good. The sky is the limit when it comes to toppings for this salad.

Recipe:

1 Large tomato

sliced mozzarella or pearls

Gourmet Garden Chopped Basil

Creamy Balsalmic Glaze

Olive Oil

Chopped Nuts of choice

Slice a large tomato on a plate and spread around. Slice mozzarella and layer on top of tomatoes. You can also just add mozzarella pearls. Next, sprinkle on chopped basil. Now drizzle your balsamic glaze and olive oil. Top the salad with your favorite chopped nuts and salt and pepper to taste. Simple and delicious!

A New Year

I can not believe 2016 is over! It was a year of growth, trials, success, learning, and adventures. I think, overall, 2016 was good to our family. I started this little blog with no idea what I was getting into. I just knew I loved DIY and design. Mr. Whitelane and I had been doing home improvements to our various houses for years. I had more tools than most men I knew. Lowe’s and Home Depot was my second home. I loved reading other home improvement and design blogs. I knew that I wanted to share my projects, style, and ideas too.

I can still remember sitting at my Mom’s house during my little one’s nap time one day. We had sold our townhouse and were living in a temporary home. We had started plans to build a new house. I sat in the rocking chair browsing Instagram. That is when I decided to start my own blog. I came up with White Lane Decor and started a new adventure. After the kids went to bed that night, I started trying to build my blog website. I had no idea how to build a website. I spent countless nights, while my kids slept, trying to design the perfect website. I learned a lot about domains, coding, and all kinds of things I never thought were part of blogging. I was so happy with the finished product. I could finally focus on blogging. Well, a year later, the website has another new design (not by me). I love sharing all my projects and ideas. I feel so blessed to have this creative outlet to share our home and projects.

I am excited to see what this year brings. It has been fun to see all the design trend predictions for 2017. Pantone released “Greenery” as the color of the year. I think it is a fun, fresh pop of color. However, I don’t think last years color of the year was too big of a success. Some trends, I think will stick around this year. Natural wood tones have been a big hit and will continue to bring warmth to a room. I also think things are moving to modern clean lines and will continue to be popular. Everyone loves to add texture through patterns and that won’t change. Mixing metals will probably also be something we see a lot more of. Mr. Whitelane and I have a lot of projects in mind for the new year (including a nursery). I can’t wait to share this year’s adventures!

The Iron Cowboy

My Husband and I had the opportunity to hear one of the best motivational speeches I have ever heard. The Iron Cowboy. If you haven’t heard of him by now you are missing out. James Lawrence, a.k.a. the Iron Cowboy, completed 50 triathlons, in 50 days , in 50 states. One of which he pulled, towed, and pushed Dayton, who has cerebral palsy, through the whole triathlon. An absolutely remarkable feet, and accomplishment ( Did I mention he has a wife and 5 kids too). Listening to him talk about his experience, trials, and stories was amazing.  He said one of the hardest things is not to listen to the people who say you can’t do it. Turn down the volume on all the negativity.  Focus on the positive and uplifting things that drive you forward. That really spoke to me. In our lives, we all have goals and dreams that we are working toward. There will always be people who say you can’t do something. There will be people who put you down, tell lies, and try to break your confidence. What better advice than to block that out and focus on the good. Focus on why you have that goal and what drives you forward.

James talked about how he could not have gotten through some of the toughest times without his biggest support team, his wife and children. This really resonated with me. My husband and kids are the most important things in my life. They are the reason why I do what I do. They are everything to me.Anything I do, I do for them.  My goals and passions all start from them and the love and encouragement we have for each other. There will be dark moments and hard days on the way to reaching goals. But there will also be a team of people who love you for who you are, and want you to succeed. The mind and body are capable of so much more than we think.  We are capable of achieving so much more than what limits we think we have.

James wanted to prove to himself and children that you set a goal, and you go achieve it. Something bigger than yourself. There will be a million people tell you why you cant do something. Every time that happened; he had a solution of how it would work. There should never be a plan B. Just a variation to your original goal that lets you accomplish what you set out to do. Plan B is an excuse to give up. Make what you want to achieve the only option.

The Iron Cowboy was an incredible way to start the new year. My family has some big goals this year. We have had some tough moments lately. I was so inspired by his journey and accomplishments. It has given me a new found boost and outlook for my family and personal goals this year.

I know this wasn’t a home decor post but some things are too good not to share. 🙂
