Joyful Spring Home Tour

The following post contains affiliate links and sponsored by Hayneedle. Read my full disclosure here.

Today I am joining in on the Joyful Spring home tour, sponsored by hayneedle.com, along with 14 other amazing bloggers. If you are coming from The Porch Light Cottage or Delightfully Noted, welcome! Be sure to follow the schedule at the bottom of the post to check out all the spring tours. Also, there is an awesome hayneedle.com giveaway at the bottom of this post.  I love blog hopping and you will not be disappointed by these talented ladies.

Spring officially starts in a week. Considering it snowed last week, I am beyond excited for it to start warming up! I always get excited to decorate for Spring. It means that we are finally getting past the cold and ready to start fresh. Don’t get me wrong, I love having all four seasons in Utah. It is so fun to experience each new season.

One of my favorite spots to decorate is my World Market Everett Table. Easter and Spring are when I venture out and add some color around the house. I picked up this egg garland and grass bunnies at Michael’s. The wreath was a Home Goods find. My husband refers to this as the hallway of shiplap. I just love the character that shiplap gives our entry.

I haven’t shown much of this front room, right off the entry. It has been a work in progress. We have our piano and a sofa in here. I am still loving this DIY framed botanical gallery to go above the sofa. The perfect rug for this room is still out there. I just need to find it and bring it home.

My living room, dining room, and kitchen are all open to each other. I love open concept spaces. It just feels like there is more room. I can also be a part of all the action going on in the other areas while cooking in the kitchen.

This adorable mad hatter hat, egg garland, and big bunny (on the coffee table) are from Michael’s.

This rolling pin was actually at the Target Dollar Spot for Valentine’s Day. I thought it carried over to Easter perfectly too.  My kids just love turning on this marquee bunny from Michael’s. The poor mini chicks have also taken quite the beating from my little ones. I don’t know if they will survive another Eater around here. 🙂

Ok, let me tell you about the best shopping experience ever, hayneedle.com. It is like Home Goods, T.J. Maxx, and Target all combined but better! Way cuter selection and the prices are AMAZING! The best part is that I get to do all my shopping while wearing my pajamas in bed. I don’t have to drag my kids in and out of a million stores to find one thing I am looking for. I had the hardest time trying to decide what I wanted to order for this spring tour. There may, or may not, be a whole cart full items still waiting to be purchased. 🙂 Hayneedle was so kind to send me this duvet set and bench for my master bedroom spring refresh. I have been searching for the perfect duvet for this bedroom since we moved in. I am in love with the look and feel of this duvet. It is like sleeping in luxury hotel bedding. Since the name is Luxury Hotel Microfiber Set, totally makes sense now!  Mr. Whitelane even thinks it feels super comfy.

A bench is a necessity in our bedroom. Mr. Whitelane wakes up way earlier than me. Every time he puts on his shoes, he sits on the end of the bed. I am a light sleeper and I would always wake up. Not anymore. This bench has saved me many minutes of sleep. I love the black metal base that ties into our barn door. Best of all, it was so easy to assemble and came right to my front door. It has also withstood the kid superhero test. Many jumps later, still going strong. It was my first time ordering with hayneedle.com and I am definitely hooked! Hayneedle is also giving away a $250 shopping spree to one of you! Click HERE to enter your email and follow @hayneedle on Instagram. Contest runs until March 20th. Good luck!

Don’t worry, the tour doesn’t stop here. Go check out these other awesome ladies in the schedule below. We have loved putting the Joyful Spring Home Tour together. It has been such fun showing you our spring decor and working with hayneedle.com. Tomorrow is the final day of the tour. So, don’t miss out! Barn Door

Our builder wanted to charge us a couple hundred dollars to have a door from our master bedroom to the bathroom. Otherwise, it would just be an opening. There was no way I was paying to have another basic door like the rest of the house. Having a door open into the bathroom from the bedroom would be a waste of space too. I opted to leave it as an opening and I would add my own barn door later. The barn door would save space and be way cuter!

(Don’t laugh at my bathroom mirror. We are in the middle of putting shiplap on the wall behind the mirror. So for now, it is just sitting there.)

I started looking for barn doors and hardware. I could not decide what style I wanted, from the door to the hardware. I looked for months trying to find the perfect style and price. Well, I found pieces of what I wanted here and there but they were way over priced. Then one day I was at my second home, Home Depot. Strolling the aisles I came across their selection of barn doors. I found this Masonite Knotty Alder “Z” barn door. It needed some adjustments but I knew I could make it work. At $499 for the door and hardware, I was sold! Plus, I had a coupon. We loaded up this bad boy and brought it home to get to work. I loved the planks and face of the door. I didn’t love the knotty alder wood. The door comes unfinished so you can paint or stain it. I knew I wanted it white. Shocker! I did not want all the knots to show up so I filled them with wood filler. One side at a time. Once it was dry, I sanded them down smooth. Now, we had a nice smooth wood surface to paint.

I got out my favorite spray can primer, KILZ. I attached my spray gun nozzle (so my finger wouldn’t die) and started spraying. I used the same method as in my video tutorial. After the primer dried, I gave it a fine sanding with 180 grit sandpaper. I flipped the door over and did the same thing to the other side. I used a compressor to blow off all the dust from sanding. I also took a clean rag and wiped down both sides really well. Now I was ready to paint.

I really wanted to use Krylon spray paint for the door too. It is just so easy and quick to use. However, I decided to match the paint with the other doors and trim. Sherwin Williams was having their big 40% off paint sale. Talk about good timing. I grabbed a gallon of semi-gloss “High Reflective White.” I do have a paint sprayer but I hardly ever use it. It is a lot of work and sometimes just a pain. It had to be done, so I busted it out. I even made a little video, just for fun.

I got a 1×4 solid wood primed header piece to attach the hardware and door to the wall. I sprayed the header while I was spraying the door. I did not love the handle that came with the door. I found this one at Lowe’s that matched our house better.  Our awesome contractor hung the door for us and I am loving it!

Master Bedroom Ceiling Idea

I am so excited I finally found what I want for the master bedroom ceiling. I was really bummed that the ceiling is not vaulted….I know??? What’s up with that? There was a tray ceiling but we took it out. It had a weird jog and I didn’t like it. So that left us with a clean slate to work with. There is a ceiling fan and two speakers to work around. Not a ton of stuff and I think it will be easy to make it work and look good.

At first, I thought I would do some simple board and batten on the ceiling and call it good. I started to looking for ideas. Planking was another idea I thought about. I liked both of these ideas but nothing was really sticking out to me. Then one day I was browsing Pinterest and came across this picture below. Cassity, over at Remodelholic, snapped this picture at a home show. I was sold on this for our ceiling! I love the planks with the thin overlay “beams”.

I also found this image over at Sawdust Girl. Then I was really excited. Now stay with me for this confusing explanation. 🙂 Ok. So, I love the beams in the picture making an “X” but not how thick they are. I also don’t love the beadboard behind the “X” beams. Remodelholic’s picture is great because the beams are low profile but they make a “T”. I think I like the “X” better but I would have them in low profile beams. I also like the planks in Remodelholic’s picture. The planks are going at an angle between the beams. I wonder if the planks going at an angle with an “X” beam overlay will be too busy? I thought that I would do a low profile “X” beam with planks going vertically across the sections. Does that make sense? I will take what I like from each picture and make it work for our bedroom. Who knows? Maybe I will get crazy and do the planks on an angle with a low profile “X” beam. 🙂 I really am indecisive! diy_box_beam_ceiling

The master bedroom needs something on the ceiling to set it apart and jazz it up. I am excited to see how my idea pans out. I guess we will find out in four weeks.

Easy Spring Refresh

How come when the seasons change, I don’t know what to wear? It’s that awkward time between winter and summer called spring. But where I live, half the time spring is still cold. Then some days it’s kind of warm. Yeah… I don’t know why but it is throwing me off. Good thing I have my spring decor (inside) on point. I wanted to share a few simple ways to refresh your home for spring.

When this time of year comes around I always like to swap out my pillows. I usually have decorative pillows on my bed. I try to lighten them up and keep it simple for the spring and summer. In my living room on the couch, I also throw out some neutral and light pillows. Let me tell you about a little secret…….pillow covers. Hobby Lobby has a whole section of fun zip up pillow covers. I keep my same old pillows on the couch but put a new fun cover on them for the seasons. They are relatively cheap from $6 – $12 each when you use your 40% off coupon, or wait until they run them at 50% off. Try to keep them light and bright to bring the cheer of spring into your home.

Next, I usually try to swap out my flower arrangements. I try to bring in fun floral accents that remind me of spring. White Hydrangeas are one of my favorite fake flowers. I have them in my master bedroom and just love the look. I also have some open shelves with milk bottle vases. I try to swap out the flowers in these vases for a fresh spring look too. Hobby Lobby is also one of my go-to shops for fake flowers. I like to wait until they run the floral sale and snag up a few of my favorites.

I know you have picture frames laying around or even hung on the wall. I have a frame on my open shelves just for printable sayings or pictures. It is a simple white wood frame (on my open shelves) that matches my decor. However, I can easily print off anything to fit the time of year. Spring reminds me of flowers, the sunshine, and the outdoors. Ella Claire (one of my favorites, so click the link and go there now) has so many cute free printables to display for spring. Seriously, you will want to print them all. There are so many awesome free printables to choose from online. This is probably one of my favorite easy swaps to refresh my home.

Hopefully, this gives you a few good ways to bring some spring into your home. I love what each new season brings. It is fun to spread that throughout the home.
